Anthropic’s September threat intelligence report is a useful shift in the AI security conversation because it treats misuse as workflow infrastructure, not prompt abuse.
The report covers activity Anthropic disrupted between December 2025 and August 2026 across cyber operations, surveillance, influence operations, conventional weapons, biological misuse, scams, fraud, and illicit distillation. It says threat actors used Claude Haiku, Sonnet, and Opus in cases involving reconnaissance, exploitation, lateral movement, credential harvesting, data exfiltration, malware rebuilding, propaganda production, surveillance analysis, and model distillation pipelines.
Two details matter for operators. First, Anthropic says AI has collapsed part of the labor and tooling gap between sophisticated groups and smaller actors, making the polish of an operation a weaker attribution signal. Second, the report identifies AI supply chain targets including API keys, session tokens, wrappers, LiteLLM and OpenClaw deployments, evaluation sandboxes, proxy services, and model-routing services.
Grey Haven’s read: AI security has moved into the operating layer around models. The risky asset is no longer just a chat window. It is the credential, router, sandbox, agent harness, cost center, and workflow permission path that lets a model act with speed and cover.
The operator implication is direct. AI inventories should include keys, proxies, routing services, eval environments, logs, budgets, and human escalation paths, not merely approved model names. Watch next for whether vendors publish concrete containment controls and incident playbooks, not just policy language.
