GitHub’s Copilot changelog is small, but the control shift is not. Kimi K2.7 Code is now generally available in Copilot, and GitHub describes it as the first open-weight model offered as a selectable option in the Copilot model picker. It is hosted by GitHub on Microsoft Azure and billed under usage-based pricing at provider list pricing.
The enterprise detail matters more than the launch headline. GitHub says Kimi K2.7 Code is off by default for Copilot Business and Copilot Enterprise. Administrators have to enable a specific policy before organization users can select it, and GitHub explicitly tells admins to review open-weight models against security, compliance, and data-governance requirements.
Grey Haven’s read: coding copilots are becoming governed model marketplaces. The operational problem is no longer whether a developer can find a capable model. It is whether the organization can route work across model classes without losing billing control, auditability, data policy, or review discipline.
Operators should treat model pickers as policy surfaces. Before enabling cheaper or open-weight coding models, define which repositories, data classes, and task types are allowed. Watch for the next layer of complexity: automatic model selection that optimizes cost or latency but makes provenance and accountability harder to explain.
