Vertical Agents Win When They Own the Operating Console

Autel's AWS case study shows why the best enterprise agents may look like digital employees inside very specific infrastructure workflows.

AWS's July 16 Autel case study is a strong vertical AI signal because it is specific. Autel, a global EV charging station and energy management provider, used AWS services and AI agents to turn its Charging Station Management System from a traditional hardware-focused platform into what it calls an intelligent operations enabler. The customer is not a generic knowledge worker. It is a Charge Point Operator managing physical charging infrastructure.

The facts make the opportunity concrete. Autel cites 17.8 million EVs sold globally in 2024, nearly 19 percent of light vehicle sales, and an industry path toward 250 million EVs and more than 1.2 million public charging units by 2030. Managing that infrastructure requires configuration, monitoring, revenue analysis, smart charging, site setup, charger onboarding, and pricing decisions. AWS says Autel built five specialized AI digital employees using Strands Agents SDK and Amazon Bedrock so operators can use conversational interfaces instead of complex manual workflows. Some analyses that previously took days can now take minutes.

Grey Haven's read: this is the shape of useful vertical agents. They do not begin as broad assistants. They begin as role-specific operators inside a messy business console, with domain language, backend actions, and measurable operational outcomes. The moat is not only model quality. It is the product's understanding of charger states, utilization, pricing, alerts, customer support, and configuration risk.

Operator guidance: if a company is building agents for an overlooked industry, start with the operating console that people already live in. Pick a workflow where the agent can reduce training burden, cut manual analysis time, or prevent configuration mistakes. Then define the permission model carefully. The agent should know when it can recommend, when it can configure, when it needs approval, and when it must escalate to a human operator.
